Mapping Auditory-Motor Speech Control Across Dopaminergic States in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease affects speech as well as movement. Up to 90% of patients develop a quiet, monotonous voice that is hard to understand and limits emotional expression. Yet, speech rarely improves with standard dopaminergic treatment. This project investigates how the loss of dopamine affects the brain’s ability to synchronize the sound of one’s own voice with the motor commands for speaking, proposing a mechanism that explains why speech remains impaired even when motor symptoms improve.
