Metabolic control of neuronal function by ketones: the search for the mitochondrial carrier

During carbohydrate scarcity, the liver produces ketones to keep organs, especially the brain, supplied with energy. Traditionally, ketones were thought to serve only as fuel in mitochondria but recent findings show they can also help build fats in the cytosol. This project aims to identify the mitochondrial transporter that determines how ketones are used inside cells. Understanding this process could reveal the impact of differential ketone partitioning on neuronal function.
