New generation of researchers receives millions to pursue their most ambitious ideas
From brain cancer and bacterial diagnostics to the brain’s own cleansing system: Six promising researchers will each receive 11 million kroner to establish their own research groups and set a new direction in health science.
An LF Fellowship lasts five years and provides researchers with the funding and freedom needed to delve deeply into ambitious projects—while gaining experience in leading and developing their own research groups.
"The transition to leading one’s own research team is a crucial step in any researcher’s career. With LF Fellows, we aim to support young top researchers and give them the freedom and resources to develop their original ideas, build strong research environments, and generate new insights with the potential to make a real difference for patients and society,” says Peter Thostrup, Scientific Programme Director at the Lundbeck Foundation.
- The Lundbeck Foundation received a total of 84 applications, of which 51 were from men, 27 from women, and 6 where gender was not specified.
- 4 male and 2 female applicants were selected.
A Program for Tomorrow’s Leaders
Leading one’s own research group requires more than scientific expertise. It requires the ability to motivate and develop people, create a work environment where researchers thrive, and navigate a field that places increasing demands on researchers as leaders.
That is precisely why a mentor-based leadership development program is an integral part of the Fellowship program.
“We want not only to support outstanding research, but also to empower the people who will lead the research environments of the future. Many researchers find that the transition to the role of research leader brings entirely new challenges. With the built-in leadership development program that comes with the grant, we provide Fellows with a safe space to work through concrete situations and dilemmas from their daily lives and help them develop their own leadership style,” explains Peter Thostrup.
Six Fellows, Six Projects Strengthening Brain Research
The six new LF Fellows were selected from among 84 applicants and represent a broad range of biomedical and clinical research. Together, their projects cover a range of topics from glioblastoma, viral meningitis, and bacterial infection diagnostics to immune system communication, cell therapy for brain diseases, brain aging, and the neural mechanisms behind auditory imagination and hallucinations.
