Serotonin’s role in early human brain development - a study in region-specific brain organoids

In early brain development, before the brain can produce serotonin itself, this important neurotransmitter is provided through the placenta. Studies in rodents indicate important effects on brain stem cells and cortex formation. The present project aims to clarify the human-specific timing of placenta derived serotonin and effects on unique cell types of the forebrain. We expect the study to provide important, novel insights into the role of placenta-derived serotonin in human brain development.
